Mahindra has been on an absolute roll lately. The XEV 9e is their most ambitious electric SUV yet — a coupe-style electric SUV built on a brand new dedicated EV platform, with a 656 km claimed range, a 43.3-inch triple screen dashboard, 286 bhp, and a starting price of just Rs. 21.90 lakh. TechWithShanmukha drives the Mahindra XEV 9e to find out if it lives up to the hype.

Design — A Head Turner Like No Other Indian EV

The Mahindra XEV 9e is without doubt the most striking looking electric SUV you can buy in India under 35 lakhs. The coupe-style sloping roofline, the muscular wide body, the flush door handles, and the full-width LED light bar at the front and rear give it a presence on the road that most cars costing twice as much cannot match.

At 4789mm long, 1907mm wide, and 1694mm tall with a 2775mm wheelbase, the XEV 9e is a genuinely big car. The 20-inch alloy wheels on the top variant fill the wheel arches perfectly and add to its sporty, premium character. The sloping roofline does affect rear headroom slightly but the overall visual drama it creates is worth it.

Mahindra has done something really special with the XEV 9e's design — it looks like a concept car that somehow made it to production. If you want an EV that turns heads everywhere you go, nothing at this price comes close.

Interior — The 43.3-Inch Triple Screen Changes Everything

Step inside the Mahindra XEV 9e and the first thing you notice is the massive 43.3-inch digital slab spanning the entire dashboard. This consists of three individual screens — a 12.3-inch driver display, a 12.3-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch passenger screen. This triple screen setup is something you would normally find in cars costing 60 lakhs or more.

The infotainment runs on Mahindra's AdrenoX software powered by the MAIA architecture — it is fast, smooth, and packed with connected features. The top variant also gets rear seatback screens, letting passengers plug in their devices and watch content on the move — a feature previously seen only in luxury cars.

Other interior highlights include a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system, an augmented reality heads-up display, ventilated and powered front seats, a panoramic glass roof with embedded lighting effects, and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The cabin space is excellent for a coupe-SUV and the 663-litre boot is among the largest in its class.

Performance — 286 bhp and 0 to 100 in 6.8 Seconds

The Mahindra XEV 9e is built on the new INGLO platform — Mahindra's dedicated electric vehicle architecture. The single rear-wheel-drive motor produces 286 bhp and 380 Nm of torque. That is more power than a Hyundai Verna, more than a Toyota Fortuner, and more than most sedans and SUVs at this price.

The result is a 0 to 100 kmph time of just 6.8 seconds — genuinely quick by any standard. The throttle response is instant as expected from an EV and the power delivery is smooth and linear. The top speed is 202 kmph — perfectly adequate for Indian roads and highways.

The ride quality is excellent across different road conditions. The INGLO platform's low centre of gravity keeps the car very stable during cornering. The 207mm ground clearance handles speed breakers and bad roads with confidence. Overall the XEV 9e is one of the most enjoyable EVs to drive in India right now.

Range — 656 km Claimed, 456 km Real World

The Mahindra XEV 9e comes in two battery options — a 59 kWh pack on entry variants and a 79 kWh pack on higher variants. The 79 kWh variant claims 656 km of ARAI-certified range. In real world testing with AC on, highway driving at normal speeds, and mixed city use, you can realistically expect around 456 km — still excellent for an Indian EV.

The INGLO platform enables fast charging from 20 percent to 80 percent in just 20 minutes using a DC fast charger. This is one of the fastest charging speeds available in an Indian electric car. For overnight home charging a standard AC charger fills the car completely while you sleep.

Mahindra also offers a lifetime warranty on the XEV 9e's battery — the only electric car in India to offer this. This removes one of the biggest concerns Indian EV buyers have about long-term battery degradation.

Features That Make the XEV 9e Stand Out

  • 43.3-Inch Triple Screen Dashboard Three individual 12.3-inch screens for driver, centre, and passenger — running Mahindra's AdrenoX software. Normally found only in luxury cars costing 60 lakhs or more.
  • Lifetime Battery Warranty The only electric car in India to offer a lifetime warranty on its battery pack. This removes the biggest long-term concern about EV ownership.
  • Level 2 ADAS Safety Suite Includes lane keep assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control — a comprehensive safety package.
  • Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display Projects navigation arrows and speed information onto the windscreen overlaid on the real road ahead — makes driving safer and more intuitive.
  • 16-Speaker Harman Kardon Audio Premium surround sound system that fills the cabin with rich, detailed audio. One of the best in-car audio systems available under 35 lakhs.
  • Auto Parking Assist The XEV 9e can automatically park itself without needing painted markings — just a big enough space for the car. One of the most practical driver assist features on the car.
  • Rear Seatback Screens Top variant gets screens on the rear seatbacks — passengers can plug in devices and watch content on the move. Previously only seen in luxury vehicles.

TechWithShanmukha Verdict

The Mahindra XEV 9e is a landmark car for India. Never before has an Indian car manufacturer produced something this bold, this advanced, and this exciting at this price. A 656 km claimed range, 286 bhp, a 43.3-inch triple screen interior, Level 2 ADAS, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon system, auto parking, and a lifetime battery warranty — all starting at Rs. 21.90 lakh.

The XEV 9e does have some compromises — the coupe roofline reduces rear headroom and the high floor makes getting in and out slightly awkward. But these are minor issues in the context of everything this car does brilliantly.

If you are in the market for a premium electric SUV under 35 lakhs, the Mahindra XEV 9e is the most exciting, most feature-packed, and most value-for-money option in India today. TechWithShanmukha highly recommends it.
